Moving Lines Ensemble

An Albuquerque and Iowa City based ensemble, Moving Lines Ensemble was formed in 2018 with an aim of exploring interactions between music and spoken word. They often create through processes of collaborative, musical and poetic improvisation, establishing pieces which range from open improvisational frameworks to more traditionally notated scores and poems. In this way, they intentionally play with the relationship between the inevitable “score” or framework of a piece and its moment-by-moment realization. Drawing from a wide range of musical styles, their pieces tend toward direct expression of personal experience and frequently highlight various modes of transportation as a way of looking at relationships between body and place.

Moving Lines Ensemble has performed at the UNM John Donald Robb Composers' Symposium, Albuquerque Chatter, Thirsty Eye Brewing Company, Public Space One, and as made several appearances as part of the Thirsty Ear poetry event.

The current ensemble consists of a founders John Barney (poet/performer) and Levi Raleigh Brown (percussionist/composer) along with saxophonist Charlotte Leung and cellist Adrián Gómez.
